The Tie That's Making Neckwear Cool Again

by Pitch Lekskul June 29, 2016

Ties aren't exactly top of mind in the menswear world right now. At least, not with all the sweatpants and sneakers dominating shelves, and the air tie still holding strong. But maybe it’s finally time to have some fun with the staple again. Breakout brand Post Imperial is making a casefor getting freaky with bright-color neckwear, and stylish celebrities like Ryan Gosling and Alexander Skarsgard have been working on promoting another out-there trend: ties with standalone embroidery.

Think of it like a tie finished with one of those iron-on patches that are all over jean jackets and bombers right now. Depending on the particular embroidery the tie can take on various moods. The Louis Vuitton, panther-accented tie Skarsgard wore to the Legend of Tarzan premiere last night, for example, felt appropriately feral. And when Gosling wore one finished with a bright-red rose to his own movie premiere earlier this summer, it was romantic with a wink. (He’s always working that “Hey, Girl” angle.)

Only time will tell if this look will become a full-blown thing. We certainly hope it does. The formalwear staple is due for a shake-up, and there's something cool about bringing these rock 'n' roll motifs into dressed-up settings. Not everyone can be the guy with a strategically placed neck or hand tattoo poking out of his button-down shirt so this is sort of like the next best thing.
